OMG!

I haven't mentioned this on the blog before, but I was in the process of applying to nursing school for the last couple months. It was iffy, because my work experience is great but my academics are a bit patchy.

I just got in.

  6. Sneak: Yay! Will you be moving, or is the school close?

Mac: You can poke me with YOUR needle and give me check-ups WHENEVER YOU WANT.

  7. Sneak - It's very close.

Mac - Be careful, I might take you up on that, and it might not be quite as fun as you expect...

  25. Sneak - If I may offer my general understanding, gathered from listening to the news, having a family member who is a health worker, and watching lots of House and Grey's Anatomy:

ER stands for Emergency (or Emergency Room, maybe?) and ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit.

ER the first place folks with an urgent problem show up to get assessed, admitted, treated, etc. It's also where ambulances go to.

ICU is where people who need intensive care go (like if someone is in 'critical' or 'serious' condition) - imagine lots of tubes being involved and restricted visiting privileges (like when you're only allowed in if you're a spouse, which can cause problems for some poly and/or LGBT folks, depending on the legislation in the area and/or the general awesomeness of the staff).

  26. I actually just got out of the ER, I needed treatment for asthma. It wasn't anything a regular doctor couldn't do, but my asthma didn't get bad until after student health closed. Everyone there was fantastically nice and helpful, and I was in and out in an hour.
I'd just like to express my appreciation for all medical staff ever. You guys rock. And sometimes save my life.

  27. Uh, this is thekitchenchemist again, but my comptuer is being weird...
Anyway, that came out wrong. What I meant to say is that I'm sure you will do great and I'd like to express how awesome I think it is that you are choosing to be a nurse.

  31. Congrats!

Also, a part of me is scared of continuing to read this because both my grandmothers are nurses and so the "sexy nurse" meme is pretty much anathema to me.

Hooray! The world needs more awesomesauce nurses. Nursing school itself can really suck, but it's such a privilege to be a patient's most trusted resource and companion. I'll be on the lookout for updates, of both the "I love this job" variety and the "I hate my professors/school" variety.

Also, I have lots of recent (within the last three years) nursing texts that might be of use to you. Let me know if you want a full list.

  34. MG Dancer - I never worked in an ICU. I worked briefly in a ventilator hospital, which isn't quite the same thing. (An ICU is for care of acute illness, and we took care of people who needed ventilators long-term.)

Sneak - What April Q. said. Although I'll add that at least where I've worked, visiting restrictions haven't been a problem; honestly, the staff is usually so grateful that anyone is visiting that they don't give you a hard time. I think problems only come up when:

    a) A nurse decides to take the initiative in being a bigot
    or more often
    b) The parents (or some other family members) say "I don't want that... person around my child!" and force the issue.

Sasha - I'm going for an ADN.

Char - Thank you so much for the offer! I'm getting my book lists next week and I will get in touch.

  36. RE: Holly and April Q.

Sneak: Thanks! I think I understand now.

Rogan: Augh, no needles. Mac has magic anti-fainting powers most of the time, but I don't. Unless they're the tattoo type, in which case I'm totally fine.

  37. I made a comment once about you going to nursing school. I'd like to think I had something to do with your decision. Haha! :p I have been a psych nurse for almost 8 years. I have my Master's and an getting close to becoming a psychiatric NP. I love nursing; I think it's such a beautiful profession with tons of versatility in what you can do. Congratulations!

  38. Congratulations, Holly! That's a big deal. EMTs are great but nursing? Wow. The cool thing is that life as an EMT is going to give you a seriously different perspective when it comes to the practicals.

    Good luck with the academics!
