The visions.

I'm getting weird synesthetic visions almost every time I have sex now. I can't really explain it.

Last night, I was having sex with Rowdy, and I was seeing gold vines twining up a green background, forming shapes like an Oriental rug. I was still aware of the room in reality, and of Rowdy of course, but every time I closed my eyes the vines were there. This happens almost every time, with different imagery, always very fixed and abstract. I'll be fucking and I'll have the image of a series of purple hills rushing past, or of examining every facet of a blue gem. It's not really pleasant or unpleasant in itself, it doesn't interfere with my pleasure in sex, and it's not something I feel any voluntary control over. It's just a strange sort of waking dream.

I've always experienced sex as a sort of altered state, as something that took me out of this reality. But it's still odd that it's causing me to literally--and lately, reliably--hallucinate.

  1. Oh, wow. I get this, too.

I have a kind of visual/gustatory synesthesia - I taste (and often, but not always, smell) in color. That's a pretty common one for synesthetes. But I also have visions quite similar to what you describe during sex, especially during cunnilingus. I don't know any other synethetes who do that, besides you and I. I suspect there are many more people who do, but that it goes largely unreported.

  2. Oh my god, I thought I was the only one. Seriously.
Sometimes it's mid-century modern furniture (really, brain?)
Sometimes it's this Victorian-era-looking street in Chinatown, in the rain.
    Sometimes it's abstract black-and-white images.

It makes sense that it's not a thing that my brain and my brain alone does, but I've never seen anyone talking about it before.

    1. that is the EXACT same thing I had!!!

  3. One of my best friends tastes music- or, rather, tastes most sounds to some extent, but only music evokes a powerful enough response for her to REALLY taste it. Some people's brains are just awesome I guess.

    1. This is interesting. I came here to see if anyone knew about "visions" that I have after sex. After making love with my girlfriend I quite often "drift" meaning I see and hear things from other places. Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

  4. Another one from the "me, too!" corner, i guess. Although mine are really abstract and always in shades of grey, and it happens maybe twice a year. I also remember seeing these things when I masturbated as a kid. But it happens under other circumstances, too, with no apparent connection between the different situations.

  5. I'd like to go against the grain here and say that when I have sex, it just feels really good.

  6. you might have a brain tumor. just throwing that out there. because they can cause the kind of crossed wires you're describing here.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Its doubtful that a tumor would cause hallucinations only during sex, and not during other activity.
Sex changes the way our brains work. We "see stars", loose the ability to speak coherently, and sometimes pass out. Visual hallucinations seem like a very normal part of this abnormal experience. I have to say though - those are some pretty strange things to see during sex. You must have a great imagination!

  8. I have weird color-gasms on and off, sometimes smell things at dramatically hightened sensitivity (like, across the fucking room or with a creepy level of accuracy for identifying), and have, on occasion, felt the strangest disconnected tingling in my fingers and toes. I just tend to go with the flow, personally.

  9. I see a poufy, Victorian-esque dress when I come, everything between floral-print cotton summer dresses to heavy dark-green winter ensembles, depending on how the orgasm feels. I'd love to see just vines, they'd make me go wtf less :D

  10. I see patches of colour and points of light whenever I'm having good sex. Although, on second thought that's probably a symptom of a brain deprived of oxygen via hypervetilation. Also, loss of my vestibular senses.

Of course, maybe the same thing with you, too (which would have all kinds of cool implications in neuroscience!).

  11. I'll see colors, and occasionally other things, but for a few years I saw the tops of shelves of books. All those little angles books make... It is fun.

And to the concern troll, I'm pretty sure we don't all have decade (+,-) long sex-related brain tumors, so hush.

  12. I wonder if it's something to do with hormones and/or endorphins? Pregnant women, who have much of both, and many of the same ones involved in sex, tend to get really vivid dreams and often have a heightened sense of smell and taste.... just a thought.

  13. I know someone who sees tiny mice scurrying around strawberry bushes when she comes. Brains are so bizarre.

  14. Oh WOW I can't believe this is, like, this unspoken thing that we all get (unspoken until you--we owe you).

I've found that different partners evoke different visions. One man, who was Caucasian, transported me to India every time. (I've never actually been to India, outside of le petit mort). Another was blue and green wavy stripes, and another was, um, math.

  15. I get the abstract designs vision--though it's very much imagination-vision and I don't truly see it during sex-- though the funny thing is that I still haven't managed to orgasm, so it's not even as a result of that.

But the plateau does have some neat stuff there.

  16. Wow. This is clearly going to be one of those days where I suspect everyone else is having a better time than I am. These things sound freakin' amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I get visions (and non-sex-related sensations sometimes, too...would those be called "kinesthetic hallucinations"?) during sexytimes.

In fact, Holly, your last post on the subject inspired me to write this: http://perversecowgirl.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/visions-and-roargasms/

I am both relieved and disappointed that my visions seem to form such a literal narrative compared to some people here. Poufy dresses? Coooooool!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey, I had this happen a few times a couple of months ago! Really vivid abstract purple shapes whenever I closed my eyes during sex. I didn't think much of it at the time, just enjoyed it. It's neat that this is a thing, I had no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dang, I wish I could see poufy dresses! I don't see things during sex, but I have a similar brain quirk: I have clients, and when I'm talking to them, each one has a particular site from my past that I see. Never anything important, just, like, the corner of Claremont Avenue and Grove Street, or the snowcone stand. I've never figured it out, but each client has his own place and it never changes.

  20. ...Wow. Count me in with the "me too" crowd. I tend to see patterns that are kind of like Eames dots: http://www.google.de/images?q=eames%20dots&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=de&tab=wi So count me in with johanna, apparently sex makes us time-travel back to the 1950s, at least in interior design terms!

  21. After reading your later posts about your job, this may be intrusion of REM state into waking because you're just really, really tired. Only throwing that out there - you've got more medical training than I do.

  22. I have never had any visions, but several of my partners (through the years)in fact have. The beautiful woman I'm with now has the most vivid by far. In the middle sex one day her eyes roll up into head (which is the norm at this point) and suddenly she begins speaking a different language, quietly at first, then very very clearly. I began to ask her questions while she was in this state just to see what would happen.
SO..after about 10min of this she literally passes out, about a 30sec later she wakes up with a jolt eyes opened big looking at me, I ask if she is ok, she nods her head yes. So I ask her what happened, she begins to describe finding herself in what appeared to be India (she is African american by the way, never been to India)and in the scene she described that she was in a crowded market with alot of people, she talked about her clothing which sounded like traditional garb.
There is alot more to the story/ies if anyone is interested or has had the same experience (blac_nature@yahoo.com)

  24. I have started exeriening the same thing. Mine is rolling hills of Irlend so green and vivid. I see on here that have not had saying cool I wish I could. But even though I am very very sexual it is almost like a acid trip. Someone once told me that the reason you see things on acid is that it causes your brain to bleed. Has anyone talked to their doctors?

    ReplyDelete
  25. No, LSD does not make your brain bleed.

  26. Maaan, I'm mega-jealous of everyone now!
I just have to read the posters on my wall.

  27. I had a vision too. It was a white stone wall in a forest near an ocean. The wall was very old and crumbled, but so very beautiful. The wall seemed to zoom in as I orgasmed. I also saw the colors blue and green, and a clear sea glass near the wall.

  28. I had this for the first time last week, but while it was happening it didn't seem strange.

We were having slow sex when I started having visions that looked like retro French artwork (mainly green, turquoise and white designs), which would last a few seconds. I could also clearly hear music occasionally, which I remember thinking sounded like French cafe music (not that I know what that sounds like!) - this was particularly weird as I'm a freak of nature who can't play music in my head.

It didn't distract me from sex, I can only describe the whole experience as 'beautiful', which is so unlike me! I wondered if it was linked to REM too because I was feeling incredibly relaxed. I've never done drugs and I hadn't had any alcohol. I seem to remember having a 'white' orgasm before. I'd never heard of synesthesia but I do relate some numbers to specific colours/personalities.

  29. So this happens to me almost everytime I have an orgasm. Visions of Victorian eras, tall buildings, petticoats, sepia toned, winding streets. Until I found this I thought I was going crazy. Its so great to see so many others like me! But what does it mean? Why does this happen? Are electrodes firing in our brains or something? Past lives? Channeling? What is it?

  30. I have odd sort of visionary, emotional-ish sensations that aren't exactly physical sometimes, like my conciousness seems to shrink back into the back of my head, and I can't concentrate on objects because they seem to be growing and shrinking even though I can see that they're physically not... ugh, it's really weird and distracting :/

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The growing and shrinking has happened to me too! I think it usually happens when Im focused on something close to my eyes and then when I look up, the object/person I'm trying to focus on becomes extremely large and small at the same time. I think it happens more when I have sleep deprivation.

  31. I too have very vivid and recurring visions of places and eras—it's so funny there are other people who see these things too! They are sort of a sacred thing to me, so for now I won't go into detail. But at risk of seeming kooky, I too often wonder about past lives. The things I see are so vivid, and span through time, I even have one ancient vision that recurs. Or maybe it's simple brain chemistry and we are visually-minded people...

  32. I'm glad to see this comment thread is still going on, because this stuff used to make me wonder what the hell was happening in my brain during sex. I haven't experienced this in the last few years, but with one ex-girlfriend I used to consistently have "visions" during sex of tall, stone rooms lined with full bookshelves and windows with leaded, multicoloured glass——almost like the library of an old university. Very pleasant images, though a little distracting. With another ex I consistently saw tilled fields, with particular detail of broken, grassy sod and thick slabs of overturned, damp earth, often under an overcast or slightly misty sky. Again, these were quite pleasant, though mysterious, images. It seemed to usually happen any time when I was/we were in a good groove, and the sex was really, really good, and so this led me to believe that my thinking mind was so absent and unnecessary I started to dream.

So glad to know there are others out there, and I wish it would happen again.

  33. Wow, this thread is really reassuring. I did a google search of "visions during sex", thinking I was about to find out about some brain tumor, but instead I came across this awesome thread. I have recently been seeing houses - two frequent ones are a big old yellow barn-like house in a bright green grassy field bathed in soft sunlight, and the other a white beach house on the shore complete with sounds and smells of the ocean. It's so weird. I feel like I know these places, but I've never been there. I also used to see flashes of royal blue and of wolves. I'm really glad this is something I can keep enjoying and not have to fear that it's a sign of a tumor anymore.

  34. I am so relieved!! I usually see a blue flower or a harbor with sailboats, but the image is as if I am looking through a lens of blue. Blue is the dominant color. It occured to me that there was a theme and I realized that my husband's wardrobe is mostly blue (I do his shopping). I wonder if I pick blue for him because it turns me on or if I get turned on because I like him in blue. Don't know which came first but, I love the visions that pop in my head. When they enter my mind I know I am about to come, so I love getting them. Bring on the blue!!

  35. Just had to look up and see if i was the only one!! I see completely different things each time during sex, nd I have been with the same man for 2 years. The most recent visions I had during sex were these beautiful black river rocks with tan lines running thru them, this was thru out the sex and when I climaxed I was suddenly watching myself ride a motorcycle thru a dried up lake bed and I was an indian lady with braids and a headband. Idk if thats weird that every single time is a different scenerio and is so vivid, but i am definitely not complaining. Its like it throws me into a completely different realm! A nice escape during a great feeling.

  36. I had been experiencing "visions" since 7 years or so. Always with a partner, my first one was so beautiful, I had the feeling of getting through clouds to see what is on top of it, the light was perfect, it was almost religious, funny because I am not a religious girl. For now it is much more images than experiences, it really depends of who I am having sex with, and my new boyfriend is somehow very talented to make me "see" things.

Images with him seems related, I have a kind of theme, not Victorian era, something older with a Castle, high ceiling, armors, he thinks it looks like a previous life, and reading your posts, that is a weird common idea.

I recently saw a pyramid, with a symbol probably an eye, on top of it - this looks very symbolic again.

That is so good to read you guys, I also googled it, very difficult to find other testimonies, I love the way out brains can be weirdly wired !!!

By the way I orgasm very easily, but visions are quite rare (1/30), how about you ?

  37. Raising my hand from the "me, too" section! I am a 28 year old female, and have experienced this for the second time, with a relatively new boyfriend. I'm not sure if this has anything or not to do with it but, although he is 21, we both feel strangely connected, as if we have known each other in many past lives, so it is really interesting to hear some of you touch on that. I see/hear/smell different things each time, but it is always a beautiful experience. I'm glad to find that I'm certainly not alone in this!!

  38. This has been happening to me for a number of years now, and it wasn't until recently that I found myself talking about it (I think I was afraid that if I acknowledged it, they would stop happening). The images are always very vivid and happen only when I'm about to have a really intense orgasm. They are never the same, but are usually an object or a pattern or a scene. The last time it happened, I saw a single stalk of wheat followed by three huge grassy hills. So random and not sexy! It's so cool to hear other people's accounts of it though; they sound eerily similar.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am beyond thrilled to read about others having similar experiences! I googled visions during sex as well because since being with my husband I have fairly vivid visions of nature and the comments about wheat and rolling hills is eerie because most all my visions involve earth made structures, tall grass, wheat, hills, blue skies, etc...I also have visions of colors and experience a state like no other. This never happened with anyone else. But I absolutely love it! Never is the vision the same. I believe in reincarnation and I like to think there's a level of access to past lives during moments of vulnerability. There's excellent science that confirms the hormonal assistance, but there's also the spiritual aspect that takes us past our physical self. There's stories of some being able to access past life experiences thru hypnosis and being a firm believer in the power of spiritual connections and cybernetics I just think it's awesome that so many of us has these experiences!

  40. I seem to be repeating how everyone else feels, but I am so glad to find that I'm not the only person who sees color schemes, themes, and patterns during sex. Mine mostly revolve around eras. Sometimes it's the 80's covered in pastels and zig zag patterns. Tonight (which finally had me saying, "Ok... I'm googling this!") was an assortment of 70's inspired floral patterns printed on vinyl seat cushions spattered in golds, burnt oranges, and browns.
I was lead to search if anyone else experiences things like this mostly because ever since becoming sexually active with my now husband, I see these colors and themes about 50% of the time we have sex. I've unfortunately found it very distracting. Luckily, my husband has been very understanding and supportive as I sit beside him in bed trying to explain the latest odd thing that ran through my head on this particular occasion of doing the deed. ;)
However, discovering I'm not alone in this is extremely comforting and I'm glad to find that most of you seem to embrace the visions and let them enhance your sexual experiences. Perhaps that is all I need to do. Although, it'd help if I could picture things a bit more palatable than outdated floral fabric. Is it too much to ask for silk and cashmere?! Haha!

  41. The commonalities among all these amaze me. I get visions too, and believe it or not, I've had some of the same ones people have mentioned, or similar. Leaded glass windows? That's a crazy coincidence. I'm fascinated by the overwhelmingly sensual content of these. Most of them seem to be beautiful, and many involve geometrical or natural-geometrical patterns (like rows of tilled earth, rolling hills, streets). I'm wondering if there is any art based on these. That's what I always think of... painting what I've seen. The way it comes out of nowhere for me, showing me images I'd never anticipate (blue school lockers? what?) and yet always makes them glow with a magic beauty somehow, is inspiring.

  42. I went to Google to search this. I've had beautiful visions for years during orgasm. I chalked it up to my analytical artistic mind (I was a chemist and a photographer) and the fact I was psychic.

Tonight however my vision was different. Broken stained glass at an abandoned train station. It was sad and lonely. It changed to a raven on a celtic cross on a tombstone in the snow. . Black and white it flew off and left me sobbing uncontrollably. Anyone experience sadness as well?

  43. This happened to my boyfriend two nights ago. He had already orgasmed, but I kept kissing his entire body. He was writhing and sighing. When I stopped to let him relax, he said he was in a beautiful place/state he had never known before. He saw cool grey stone castle walls.

  44. This has happened to me for years, but only with my current partner. Always very colourful visions such as rooms with different eras of interior design. Other times flowers or places like the beach. These visions happen automatically, without any conscious thought at all, but are not distracting in any way. I remain conscious of everything we are doing, with this colourful screen play in my mind. Only happens when I am relaxed. Could be hormones flooding the brain? Great thread .. thanks for sharing!!!

  47. Wow, I'm 44 and have had this my entire sex life. It occurred to me to google it now that that's an option...ha. So cool! I feel special. :)) Oriental scenes, soft fuzzy scenes, even pigs doing it one time. I think the visions seem to take on a theme of the emotion of the sex. Delicate and intiicate, wild and rough, soft and sweet... But exactly as the first post eloquently describes, more of a backdrop not voluntary or interruptive.
